Known for his association with Andy Warhol, Steve Kaufman (1960-2010) was a revered American pop artist, activist and humanitarian. As a teenager, Kaufman entered the world of serious pop art as Warhol’s assistant at The Factory studio. Under his mentor’s tutelage, Kaufman sold paintings to Saturday Night Live, nightclubs, and designers like Calvin Klein.
Kaufman later established his own studio SAK and hired three homeless people as assistants and muses, painting the trio for the Transportation Display, Inc. that eventually generated $4.72 million to benefit the homeless. In the 2000s, Kaufman supported over 170 charities, including his own Give Kids a Break charity.
